On Wednesday, 26 October, a memorial ceremony to commemorate fallen soldier heroes was held in the courtyard of the MoD Institute and Museum of Military History in Budapest. Speaking at the candlelight vigil organized on the occasion of All Souls’ Day, Chief of Defence Gen. Dr. Tibor Benkő asked the people assembled to remember not only those who fell in the 20th century but also the ones who were killed in action in the present age.

The chief of defence pointed out that during the ceremony, the bell tolled for those killed in action in the service of their country. As he noted, funerary bells have a threefold role in liturgy – they make the faithful aware that someone is dying, signal the fact of death and call the congregation to prayer. “Those who have sacrificed their lives did not hear the sound of the funerary bell", he said, adding that their loved ones were not with them in that fateful moment.

According to the general, dead soldiers are no longer enemies, and we must do our best to make sure that the citizens of our country and the world can live in peace. At the end of the event, the people assembled placed the candles of remembrance at the memorial in the museum courtyard.
