Commander of USA NATO Brigade visits HUN NFIU

Székesfehérvár, Hungary – The commander of the United States Army NATO Brigade visited the Hungarian NATO Force Integration Unit on Wednesday.

Colonel Karolyn I. HOOPER, commander of the United States Army NATO Brigade met Colonel László GARAS, commander of the Hungarian NATO Force Integration Unit to discuss current HUN NFIU topics, and to seek out areas of cooperation. The meeting, held at the Hungarian Defence Forces’ Joint Force Command, focused on topics related to the preparation and the establishment of the new NATO unit, including the status of manning, the possible US contribution to the NFIU, and the progress regarding the renewal of the unit’s buildings.

As the leading military organisation in delivering strategic support to its personnel, the US Army NATO Brigade in Sembach, Germany enables NATO’s collective defence mission by providing and integrating well trained US soldiers to any NATO assignments – including the NFIUs.

“The United States stands behind the NFIU concept and understands its significance," Col. HOOPER said. Following the principle of leading by example, the United States therefore has decided to send three US soldiers to each of the NFIUs including the ones already operational, and those that will only be activated later on this year.

After a working luncheon the delegation took a tour of the garrison to get acquainted with the different welfare institutions, including military accommodation, healthcare and sports facilities that will be available for foreign armed forces personnel and their family members. Col. HOOPER and Brigade Command Sergeant Major Jorge C. ESCOBEDO had a chance to meet the Hungarian NFIU staff members, and a short tour was also conducted to the future location of the unit, where rebuilding and refurbishing works are already in progress.

Before the conclusion of the meeting Col. HOOPER said she was impressed with the leadership, the facilities, and the future working environment of the Hungarian NFIU, and that she was looking forward to support the new unit with US personnel who will arrive in the second part of the year. In turn, Col. GARAS also expressed his gratitude to the visiting commander and described the US support to the HUN NFIU as substantial, and therefore is held in a very high esteem.
