“On Hungarian initiative, NATO will also assist with combating migration”, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán told the Hungarian press on Saturday, 9 July after attending a two-day meeting of the North Atlantic Council at the NATO Summit in Warsaw. He added that Hungary wanted to get the Alliance involved in European efforts aimed at stemming the flow of illegal migration.

“We have succeeded in getting NATO on our side […] we have made it clear that illegal migration must be stopped, the external borders must be protected and the uncontrolled flood of migrants does not only poses security risks to civilians but also risks to military security", Viktor Orbán said. He added that NATO has an interest in stopping this process and so it will mobilize certain capabilities.

The defence of the Eastern flank will be reinforced without violating the NATO–Russia Founding Act

Viktor Orbán said that after the Central Eastern European countries joined NATO, it was being debated for years whether they should abide by membership only or go further and field NATO’s military capabilities, too. No one wanted to have a militarily secure Central Europe at the cost of making an enemy of Russia", the Premier pointed out.

“Without violating earlier agreements between NATO and Russia, there will be continuous rotational military presence in some Central European countries, and in some other, including Hungary, NATO Force Integration Units (NFIUs) will be set up", this is how Viktor Orbán summed up the decision taken at the Warsaw Summit.
