“This exercise is an excellent example of cooperation, as we can see here how we can draw on each other’s capabilities and how we can work together” – this is what Chief of Defence Gen. Dr. Tibor Benkő said in Hódmezővásárhely on Thursday, 3 December. Together with his Slovakian counterpart Gen. Milan Maxim, the Hungarian CHOD inspected the troops participating in the joint training exercise Balaton 2015.

The joint training Balaton 2015 has been running in Hungary since 15 October with the participation of the Visegrád Four (V4) countries. Poland has contributed military equipment to the success of the exercise, whilst Slovakia and the Czech Republic have sent 20 troops each.

On 3 December, the VIP day of the exercise, the invited guests were given an insight into the ongoing construction of the Temporary Security Barrier along the border, from earthwork to building service roads to fixing the elements of the barrier.

Answering our question, Gen. Dr. Tibor Benkő told us that “what we have seen during the display is happening in reality day after day. The Hungarian troops have been participating for more than four months now in the handling of the crisis caused by mass migration". He added that the foreign troops do not perform any border security duties, as they are involved only in support tasks.

“The feedback I receive from my soldiers and the Hungarian colleagues shows that our cooperation is going on very well. Balaton 2015 is not only an exercise but also a chance to prove our skills. We have to demonstrate cooperation and that we are doing a good job. I’d like to thank my troops for their excellent work", Gen. Milan Maxim said.
