On Thursday, July 5 in the Lehel St. compound of the Ministry of Defence Gen. Dr. Tibor Benkő, the Chief of the MoD Defence Staff received with military honors Gen. Biagio Abrate, the Chief of the Italian Defence General Staff (IDGS) who was paying a three-day visit to Hungary. At the end of the discussions the two partners signed a framework agreement on education.

Biagio Abrate laid wreaths at the heroes’ memorial in Heroes’ Square, then paid a courtesy call to the Chief of the Defence Staff. At the plenary meeting held in Hotel Hadik, the Chief of the IDGS was briefed on the transformation of the Hungarian Defence Forces, their commitments in operations and the current state of military cooperation between the two countries.

At the end of the discussions, as a special item in the program schedule of the visit, Gen. Tibor Benkő and Gen. Biagio Arbate signed a framework agreement on education. The two countries mutually consider each other as special strategic partners, which is shown by the regularity of high-level meetings like the present one and the executive-level cooperation within the Multinational Land Force (MLF). For this reason, the signing of the framework agreement on cooperation in the field of military education has been an important part of the present visit.

The framework agreement on education is currently about leadership training. The system of leadership training in Italy corresponds with the recently transformed new and modern system of officer training in Hungary, which ensures the equivalence and recognition of Italian courses in Hungary and the utilization of the acquired knowledge. From 2013 on, the Hungarian Defence Forces will give priority – as foreign training tasks – to the renewal of cooperation in education and the related enrollment on (higher) leadership courses in Italy. At the same time, they need to start the prerequisite language training courses already in this year.

The two partners agreed that at a later stage it will be worth and indeed necessary to explore the possibilities for expanding the scope of cooperation in the future.
