Maj.-Gen. László Domján, the commander of the HDF Joint Force Command (HDF JFC) visited the German-led field military hospital where he informed himself about the activities of the hospital and the Hungarian medical personnel. (Reporting from the spot!)

The 10-man Hungarian medical staff serves in individual positions at the ROLE-3 military
hospital which is specialized in emergency and outpatient treatment. The current head of the
specialists working in six-month rotations is Capt. (MD) Dr. Attila Bodor. Three of the seven
nurses from the HDF Medical Center work at the intensive care unit, three at the outpatient
unit and one as a surgeon. One of the two doctors in the staff is an anesthesiologist, the other
is a general surgeon.

Col. (MD) Dr. Alex Höpner (Bundeswehr), the head of the field medical command told
us that soldiers of four nations – Germans, Americans, Dutch and Hungarians – serve in
the hospital where they provide treatment for ISAF service members, the staff members of
international cooperating organizations (UNAMA, EU etc.), as well as the members of the
Afghan army and police – and in several cases for civilians, mainly when their injuries are
related to the activities of the international forces.

On meeting the personnel, the commander of the HDF JFC stressed that no matter which area
of operations he had been to over the last 10 years, Hungarian medical staffs always had good
reputation, which enhanced the prestige of the Hungarian Defence Forces among our allies.

“I am happy to have been here with you, and I’d like to thank you for your outstanding work",
Maj.-Gen. Domján said.

Hungarian medical personnel arrived in Afghanistan in 2003 for the first time. Between 2003
and 2006, they served at the German-led military hospital in Kabul, and since 2006 they have
been working with the medical staff in Mazar-e Sharif. The medical lessons learned in the
area of operations are a useful input into the treatment in Hungary, which is available for
soldiers, policemen, firemen as well as citizens in the HDF Medical Centre.

Besides Afghanistan, Hungarian medical personnel serve in Prizren, Kosovo as well.
