In his speech delivered on the Palic great meadow, István Simicskó emphasized that Hungarians have paid the price of their freedom, and that the native land cannot be sold because that would mean giving up independence too. Speaking about Saint Stephen – who is a saint canonized by the Catholic and the Orthodox churches – the minister of defence said that the king had realized that creating the Hungarian state and adopting Christianity were the preconditions for the survival of Hungarians. “Even today, King Saint Stephen is an icon for us, which opens a window to the world of faith", he said.
István Simicskó also explained that nowadays it is often infidels or fanatics that cause troubles in the world, the former because they do not fear God, and the latter because they become terrorists and resort to violence while trying to promote their agendas. He noted that the European Union has taken “the irreversible road of change", and Hungary and the other countries in the region must set an example in the way of cooperation. “The European Union is beginning to lose its own foundations, its own faith and spirit; it seems that it has immersed itself in ultraliberalism", he added.
“It is the roots that the tree answers the challenges of the wind with" – this quote from Gyula Illyés is this years’ motto for the Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians, which shows the VMSZ’ commitment to promoting the survival of Hungarians. VMSZ Chairman István Pásztor stated that they will not give up their living space, and that being in minority, they must win all their battles and continue their struggles, because these are the roots. Speaking about challenges, he mentioned emigration, to which they must find a solution, for example through assuming a role in the government, through regional development grants and scholarship programs. “Saint Stephen entrusted the Hungarians with the task of being able to preserve what makes them a nation, by strengthening their roots so they can meet all challenges", he emphasized.
Following the speeches, István Simicskó and István Pásztor jointly cut the consecrated bread.
Prior to the ceremony at Palics, the minister of defence attended a Holy Mass celebrated in the Cathedral of St. Theresa of Avila in Subotica, and conducted a bilateral discussion with the chairman of the VMSZ.
