On Monday, 15 May, members of the American Council of Young Political Leaders paid a visit to the Ministry of Defence. The American delegation was received by MoD Parliamentary State Secretary and Deputy Minister Tamás Vargha. During their stay in Hungary, the members of the delegation are introduced to the political system of the state, its structure, institutions and main actors.

In the Ministry of Defence, the visitors were given an insight into the workings of the ministry and the main directions of Hungary’s security policy, with a focus on the details of its NATO membership.

Tamás Vargha told the seven-member delegation that Hungary is committed to the Alliance, which is shown by the roles it undertakes in a number of international foreign missions. He highlighted the foreign missions in the Western Balkans and Iraq, where Hungarian troops perform excellently in peacekeeping operations and the training of local security forces. He added that Hungary is present in foreign missions with a troop level of around 1000. During the visit, the state secretary also said that the government of Hungary intends to raise the defence budget to reach 2 per cent of the GDP in order to meet the target set by NATO.

Tamás Vargha spoke highly of the relations between the United States and Hungary, noting that the military cooperation is stable and excellent. A good example of it is the many combined training events and exercises, which are held on national and foreign ranges. Beyond the above, the members of the delegation asked the state secretary some questions about the parliamentary election due in 2018 and the electoral system, and also showed interest in the social embeddedness of the Hungarian Defence Forces.
