The recently found dead bodies of 108 Hungarian soldiers who fell in World War II will be buried in the central cemetery of Rudkino in Russia, Lt.-Col. László Töll, the Head of the Military Heritage and War Grave Care Department of the Ministry of Defence announced on Wednesday, July 18.

The mortal remains of more than 100 Hungarian soldiers who fell in World War II were unearthed in Kurks (Western Russia), Komsomolskaya Pravda reported on Wednesday. The report published in the Russian daily states that between 1941 and 1943, the German invaders and their Hungarian allies buried their dead – both the conscripts and the officers – in Borodino Park in the city center. The exhumation works were finished in recent days.

In connection with this, László Töll said that whenever the body of a Hungarian soldier is found in Russia, under the usual routine procedure the Russian authorities are to manage the reburial, whereas the Hungarian authorities are to notify the relatives, if that is possible, and add the name of the deceased to a database. Most corpses of Hungarian soldiers who fell in World War II are found in Russia, and the protocols for coordinating action in such cases are laid down in a contract on war grave care which was previously concluded with the Russian partners, Lt.-Col. Töll added.

Answering a question from MTI, he also said that the mortal remains would probably be buried in separate coffins in a common grave in the Hungarian heroes’ cemetery near Voronezh, while any personal belongings that may be found would be transported to Hungary.
