Defence Minister Opens 186th Anna-Ball

On Saturday, July 23 the traditional Anna-ball was organized for the 186th time in Balatonfüred. The main patron of the event, Defence Minister Dr. Csaba Hende opened the ball.

The Anna Grand Hotel, Balatonfüred hosted the 186th Anna-ball on Saturday. The first Anna-ball was held on 26 July 1825 inside János Fülöp Horváth Szentgyörgyi’s inn in Balatonfüred, in honor of the daughter of the host.

This year, Defence Minister Dr. Csaba Hende was the main patron of the famous event. In his opening speech, the Minister recalled the first Anna-ball, at which Ms. Krisztina Anna and Hussar Captain Ernő Kiss were tied together for a lifetime. Subsequently Ernő Kiss became one of the generals of the 1848-49 War of Independence and one of the martyrs executed in Arad.

“Centuries came and went, and it seems that both Anna and the Anna-Ball have remained eternal. During the rough times and peaceful decades of Hungary, there has always been a strong need for this meeting of young people and those who are young in their hearts. Our thanks go to the citizens of Balatonfüred for presenting us with this great tradition and this splendid heritage year by year", Dr. Csaba Hende said, and wished everyone an unforgettable evening.

The Herend porcelain hussar sculpture depicting Ernő Kiss was presented during the event for the eighth time to the person who has devoted many efforts to promote the culture and intellectual life of Balatonfüred. This year’s awardee was Farkas Litkey, who won the “Blue Ribbon Regatta" of Lake Balaton for the tenth time this year.

Needless to say, by tradition, the Belle of the Anna-ball was chosen in 2011 as well. On this occasion, the 21-year-old Nikolett Frei, a college student of Kiskőrös scored the most votes.
