Doing an Inconspicuous but Important Job

The Clever Ferret 2017 tactical exercise of the Italian–Hungarian–Slovenian Multinational Land Force (MLF) has been going on for two weeks now in the Bakony Military Training Area and Range. The planning and organization of training tasks, the coordination of actions carried out by units of the primary training audience and the successful overall implementation of the exercise are the responsibilities of the Exercise Control (EXCON) Cell located at the Újmajor base.

This spring, the Political-Military Steering Group (PMSG) – the highest decision-making body of the MLF – made a decision that Exercise Clever Ferret will be held in Hungary in 2017. The preparations for the exercise got under way immediately at the HDF Joint Force Command in Székesfehérvár. The Command hosted the planning conferences at which the representatives of MLF nations delegated to the EXCON Cell formulated the exercise specifications and issued the relevant official STARTEX documentation as well as the training package with the objectives, defined the scope of participants, delineated the organizational responsibilities for special tasks and planned the entire process of implementation, that is, the whole conduct of the exercise. Salient among the general objectives to be attained by the MLF was the development of integration, cooperation, trust and mutual understanding among the participating nations, whereas the military-training objectives focused on the coordinated interoperability and task execution of branches of service, joint preparation for crisis response operations and procedural drills of tactical capabilities.

The task of directing the coordinated daily activity and training of close to 1000 troops and over 200 technical assets participating in the exercise involves increased responsibility, and requires high-level professional expertise and cooperative skills of each member of the EXCON Cell, independent of their nationality. The working language is English, so everybody has opportunities to further improve their written and verbal communication skills in the multinational environment.

Basically, the professional work done by the members of the EXCON Cell is inconspicuous, but its results and professionalism show up in the training area, in the performance of the primary training audience and the safe conduct of training sessions.
