As a result of the cooperation related to the NATO Framework Nations Concept – under the supervision of the General Staff Force Planning Directorate – the HDF Artúr Görgei CBRN Area Control Center has recently organized and launched a CBRN Warning and Reporting Course in Budapest.

In the interest of strengthening international CBRN defence training and preparation, the eight participants of the course from five NATO member countries –the Czech Republic, Denmark, Lithuania, Germany and Slovenia – are introduced to operational procedures and staff cooperation in the NATO CBRN Warning and Reporting System in accordance with the latest NATO standards set out in Allied Tactical Publication ATP-45. They learn the methods for quick evaluation of CBRN information and the tasks of alerting our groups and collecting information to support commanders’ decision. In addition, the training audience also acquires techniques for immediate Warning and Reporting and hazard prediction of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear incidents, in order to be able to reduce casualties, ensure combat efficiency and survivability and minimize risks. At the end of the course, the students will take an exam to test their knowledge.

The CBRN evaluator’s job is not only focused on the analysis of the impact of possible uses of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in armed conflicts, but also encompasses the evaluation of chemical substance releases and times of arrival calculation in the event of peacetime industrial disasters and road transport accidents.

Besides the evaluators of the HDF Artúr Görgei CBRN Area Control Center, the lecturers of the two-week English-language course running in Hotel Hadik also include experts from the HDF Geoinformation Service and the Military Leadership Training Institute of the National University of Public Service, Faculty of Military Science and Officer Training.

To ensure the continuous operation of the Hungarian Defence Forces CBRN Warning and Reporting System, every year the HDF Artúr Görgei CBRN Area Control Center organizes similar courses in Hungarian for HDF units and also as part of servicing the educational institution of the HDF NCO Academy. In earlier years, it already held a number of International Military Training Courses similar to the present one – at that time, the participants arrived mainly from NATO Partnership for Peace (PfP) countries. Thanks to the continuously increasing interest, the English-language course will probably be organized next year again.
