As part of his official program, the ACT COS met with Col. (MD) Dr. István Kopcsó, the
director of the NATO Centre of Excellence for Military Medicine (NATO MILMED COE),
who informed the guest about the activities of the Centre – which was established four year
ago and has been successfully operating since –, as well as the future challenges in the light of
current EU and NATO doctrines and policies. They also discussed opportunities to improve
cooperation and coordination between the ACT and the Centre.

Vice-Admiral Johnstone-Burt pointed out that the Budapest-based Centre which is run by
seven sponsoring nations (NATO member states) contributes significantly to the force health
protection (FHP) capabilities of allied operations.

During the discussions the director of the Centre informed Vice-Admiral Johnstone-Burt
about the expected expansion of the Centre in the near future, as two new members, the
United States and Great Britain are in the process of joining the Centre, and other countries
are also showing interest in the activities of the MILMED COE.
