discussions with the Force Commander and the UNFICYP Chief of Mission. At the meeting,

the Special Representative thanked for the several-year successful Hungarian contribution to

the mission and gave a comprehensive assessment of the situation in Cyprus, also mentioning

the political and economic impacts of the crisis. Further items on the agenda included the

current relationship between the Greek and Turkish Cypriots and their diplomatic relations,

as well as the characteristic incidents occurring in the UN-supervised buffer zone, which

are handled with the Hungarian peacekeepers’ active participation. She explained in her

assessment that crisis management had been hindered by the failure to bring the two sides’

stances closer to each other. Answering a question from Maj.-Gen. László Domján, she said

that there had been a need for the improvement of living and working conditions for years in

most camps of the mission, and with this end in view, they had officially requested support

from the UN Headquarters.

In his report, Lt.-Col. Tamás Terék, the commander of the Hungarian contingent talked about

the Hungarian personnel serving at multiple duty stations and summed up their current tasks,

living and working conditions, their cooperation with the troops of other nations and informed
