The Military Advisory Team (MAT) in Afghanistan is splitting in two, in line with NATO’s transforming role in Afghanistan. As part of this process, the former members of the MAT-4 rotation were already conducting the culmination exercise as members of the HDF Force Protection Platoon.

In the area of operations, the advisors’ mission is to assist the leaders of a brigade of the Afghan National Civil Order Police (ANCOP) and the Afghan Border Police (ABP) each, for example by improving the coordination processes or generating sensitive, less outstanding capabilities. The Force Protection (FP) platoon is working to make sure that the advisors can execute their tasks in safety. During the exercise, the readiness of the participants was assessed in realistic situations, created to closely resemble the environment in Afghanistan.

The soldiers participating in the culmination exercise prove their skills in VIP security and escort and also in cordoning off areas and securing sites of negotiations. The umpires evaluated their reactions to potential ambushes during convoy operations, and the use of English, creativity and interoperability also played an important role in the after action review.
