Military Intelligence Course with American Soldiers

The Debrecen garrison of the HDF 5th Bocskai István Infantry Brigade recently hosted an intelligence course. The event was organized as part of the military-to-military program for the mutual exchange of experience. Accordingly, it was not really a formal course but rather a professional sharing of lessons learned among soldiers at the international level.

In this case, internationality involved two lecturers who came from the United States of America. The Hungarian Defence Forces were represented by participants from the HDF Joint Force Command and its six subordinate organizations (HDF 5th Bocskai István Infantry Brigade, HDF 25th Klapka György Infantry Brigade, HDF Görgei Artúr NBC Area Control Centre, HDF 12th Arrabona Surface-to-Air Missile Regiment, HDF 59th Szentgyörgyi Dezső Air Base, HDF 86th Szolnok Helicopter Base).

Because both American lecturers have yearslong experience in the field of intelligence, the course curriculum was based on this, and included topics like the steps in the intelligence preparation of the battlefield, the general structure and duties of intelligence staffs, the procedures of target management and several other tasks that the intelligence staffs of the US Army either execute or participate in them.

Of course, besides the classroom training, the program also included task execution in practice, during which the Hungarian intelligence staff officers, warrant officers and NCOs proved their skills, earning recognition from their US intelligence colleagues.

The most important value of the course was perhaps that its participants – soldiers serving in intelligence staffs of the Hungarian Defence Forces – were given a first-hand introduction to the ways the US intelligence staffs use written doctrines, and, through practical examples, had opportunity to see how they generate actionable intelligence, which in turn forms the basis of real-world military operations.
