The United States of America and Great Britain are going to join the Budapest-based NATO Center of Excellence for Military Medicine (MILMED COE), the Ministry of Defence announced on Thursday, January 3.

The two countries finalized the Note of Joining (NOJ) in the days before Christmas, which allows them to join the center operated by several other nations.

In October 2009 NATO established the institution, which is the first organization in Hungary accredited by the Alliance. Through its professional Programme of Work (POW), the Centre supports the implementation of NATO’s strategic goals in the field of military medicine and the medical transformation of the Alliance. The experts working in the Center develop new standards and standardize medical terminology, concepts and doctrines.

The MILMED COE was established by Hungary as a “framework nation", which has already been joined by several sponsoring nations such as the Czech Republic, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy and Romania.

The mission of the MILMED COE is to provide sustainable military medical support. This includes the unit-level Force Health Protection and preventive measures, emergency management of battlefield injuries (EMBI) as well as post-deployment treatment and rehabilitation.
