One Team – One Task

Lt.-Col. Dr. Péter Horváth – who arrived in Kosovo as the head physician of the HDF Joint Force Command Medical Directorate – is performing service in the KFOR-mission for the third time now. Apart from the advanced medical officer and the health care administration courses, in the framework of an 11-month trade training program the well-qualified specialist completed a combat casualty care course in 2003-2004.

Lt.-Col. Horváth told us that the members of the Priština Medical Centre were drawn into the mission from several units of the Hungarian Defence Forces. Their primary tasks are to operate the Role-1 level Portuguese–Hungarian joint medical centre of the KFOR TACRES Battalion, and to assure the universal provision of the outpatients-care and support to the operational tasks.

The field officer emphasized that besides the performance of the everyday routine tasks within the camp, the maintenance of a continuous state of readiness is also important. He added that it is indispensable to be able to react to every incident right away, to stabilize the condition of the casualties, and – if necessary – to MEDEVAC the injured either by air or road for further medical treatment.

In the interest of this, an exercise for the medical management of major incidents (with mass casualties) has been arranged recently, in which besides the Hungarian medical contingent the Portuguese and the US soldiers also took part. The practice of the so-called “9 line MEDEVAC request" constituted a part and parcel of the preparation, which is the basis of the medical evacuation activity.

The married officer with two children puts a premium on team-work in the course of the missions’ medical support, as this is the territory where there is no room for error, one has to remain cool-headed under all circumstances.
