The soldiers serving with the 1st platoon of the Hungarian contingent of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) mission were performing their daily duties when a helicopter accident occurred near their observation post. Fortunately, this was just part of an exercise that was not announced in advance.

The troops deployed at Szent István patrol base immediately reacted to the events. The military police team and the first responders of medical staff set out for the accident site within the pre-set readiness time. On their arrival, platoon leader Lt. Attila Szabó, the on-scene incident commander started executing the tasks according to standard operating procedures, by establishing perimeter defences and setting up checkpoints.

The Hungarian peacekeepers’ work was assessed as excellent by their superiors. The mid-August rescue training exercise involved altogether ten subunits, including the Hungarian platoon.
