The Heavy Airlift Wing (HAW, stationed at HDF Pápa Air Base) passed the 10.000th flying hour mark on April 2.

The significant milestone was achieved on a training mission flown from the home base by a HAW C–17 Globemaster III cargo jet bearing the tail number SAC-2, used for a check flight.

The Heavy Airlift Wing Commander, Colonel Frank Rombouts expressed his sincere appreciation to all the Strategic Airlift Capability (SAC) personnel to include the Heavy Airlift Wing, NATO Airlift Management Program Office (NAMPO) and Boeing that make the C– 17 operations of the multinational unit possible.

He also included the personnel of the HDF Pápa Air Base in his congratulations for making it possible to fly the C-17’s on a daily basis.

"It would never have been possible without all the dedication and hard work of all personnel involved in the SAC Program", Colonel Rombouts said.

Since its launch the HAW C–17s have flown over 600 missions, delivered over 29.000 tons of cargo and carried over 38.000 passengers.

It is interesting to note that the Wing passed the 4000th flying hour two years ago almost to the day, on April 1, 2011.
