We have been regarding the Poles our brothers for more than 1,000 years now, despite the trials of history, Csaba Hende said on Monday, May 4 on the occasion of Poland’s national holiday – the anniversary of the adoption of the 1791 constitution – at a reception held in Castle Bazaar, Budapest.

The Minister of Defence emphasized that everything that has been done for the birth of the 1791 constitution and in its defence makes the day valuable for Poles and for all freedom-loving people. “This is especially true of us, Hungarians, who have been regarding the Poles our brothers for 1,000 years, and stood up for each other often putting our own momentary interests aside, often going far beyond our possibilities", the Minister emphasized, adding that this is a bond that even the storms of history were unable to break.

Minister Hende pointed out that the histories of Hungary and Poland became intertwined in 1990 again, when the two nations set out together to bring freedom to fruition. “We have been closely cooperating ever since, in the alliance of the Visegrád Four, in NATO and the European Union to shape and protect our common freedom and free life", the Minister said.

Roman Kowalski, the ambassador of Poland in Budapest reminded his audience that on that day Poland commemorated the constitution adopted on May 3, 1791. The celebration of the second written constitution in the world and the first written one in Europe is at once the greatest and most beautiful tradition of Polish tolerance and democracy", the ambassador said, adding that present-day Poland also sticks with this tradition.

Roman Kowalski also said that the Hungarian–Polish relations are developing excellently. By way of example, he mentioned the economic cooperation between the two countries, whose volume reached 7 billion euros, adding that relations with the European Union are also exemplary. “We are continuously expanding this unique and special friendship between our nations, which is rich in empathy and was borne out in the hardest moments of history over the last 1,000 years", he pointed out.
