Women’s Persistent and Disciplined Work is Exemplary

The ISAF Regional Command North (RC N) recently organized a “women’s affairs conference” for the fifth time in Mazar-e Sharif, Afghanistan. At the conference it was stated that “women do well as mothers and wives, and their assiduous and self-sacrificing work creates peace and security in their environment”.

The ratio of women to men in the population is over 50% in Afghanistan. In spite of that, women rarely have opportunity to assume roles in public life. The number of brave women ready to act is on the rise, however. They make themselves heard in their homes, and are not afraid to take up even manly jobs or leadership positions as well. Their successes are exemplary. The topics for discussion in the conference included the thorny path to success and a lot of experiences. In addition to the influential Afghan female leaders from the nine provinces in the RC N area of responsibility, among the participants of the conference there were several ISAF servicewomen who work here as female liaison officers. The meeting was characterized by true multiculturalism, as the participating soldiers represented the Afghan, German, American, Dutch, Swedish and Hungarian nations.

The first session of the conference focused on the training of women currently serving with the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF), their everyday problems and their solutions. “Every province can be proud of the fearless policewomen present here", Brig.-Gen. Eric Wendt, the deputy commander of RC N stressed. He added that the women do well as mothers and wives, and their assiduous and self-sacrificing work creates peace and security in their environment. The most important goals are to retain the personnel and to further increase their numbers – and the media can be very helpful in achieving these goals. The brigadier-general asked the women not to be afraid to show how successful they can be through their persistent and disciplined work. During the second session of the conference, the winning tenders were announced for the project to help the Afghan women’s job placement and improve their living conditions.

The works are going to start in five provinces – Balkh, Sar-e Pul, Samangan, Kunduz and Baghlan, the area of responsibility of the HDF Provincial Reconstruction Team (HUN PRT). The successful tenders include the construction of houses for women, the rebuilding of a conference room, the establishment of a park with places for resting and playground, and pavilions where the ladies can sell their hand-made products undisturbed.
