Rotation of Mapping Officers in Lebanon

The second rotation of the Hungarian mapping officers serving in the personnel of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) took place in Lebanon.

1st Lt. Tamás Eke finished his one-year tour of duty abroad at the end of October 2018 as a member of the UNIFIL’s twelfth rotation, and finally returned home. On this occasion Ms. Beatrice Puyo, the Chief of the UNIFIL Geospatial Information Services (GIS) presented a memorial shield to him. First Lieutenant was mainly involved in providing support for the UNIFIL GIS, his duties were assumed by Lt. István Bodnár belonging to the personnel of the HDF 1st ‘Honvéd’ Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Warship Regiment.

Owing to the change made in the Hungarian rotation order, and also because of the reduction of the number of the Hungarian mapping officers, Lt. Bodnár is expected to spend one year and three months in the personnel of the UNIFIL Geospatial Information Services.

Lt.-Col. Zoltán Horváth has been serving in Lebanon since the end of October 2016, while Captain Attila Vámos and Ensign László Horváth since mid-February. Since 2006, Hungarian mapping officers have been serving on the staff of the UNIFIL HQ Naqoura in annual rotations, where they provide GIS support for UNIFIL teams conducting peacekeeping operations in Southern Lebanon, and they also participate in the Blue Line marking process between Lebanon and Israel.
