Defence Ministers mark progress in strengthening NATO’s defence and deterrence

NATO Defence Ministers are meeting in Brussels over the next two days (26-27 October 2016) to take forward decisions made at the Warsaw Summit in July. Today, ministers will mark progress in plans for a strengthened NATO presence in the eastern part of the Alliance, and in the Black Sea region. They will also discuss Russia’s recent military activity along NATO’s borders.

Secretary General announces first NATO AWACS flight in support of the Counter-ISIL Coalition

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg briefed media on Tuesday (25 October 2016) on the agenda of this week’s meetings of NATO Defence Ministers, and announced the first NATO AWACS flight in support of the Counter-ISIL Coalition. On Wednesday and Thursday, Ministers will mark progress in establishing NATO’s four battalions in the Baltic States and Poland, training for Iraqi officers, and cooperation with the European Union.

He stressed that the efforts of the international community to promote Afghanistan’s development and NATO’s efforts to strengthen security go hand in hand. “Without security there can be no lasting development and without development there can be no lasting security,” he said.
