Ten years ago today, at the NATO Summit in Prague, seven nations were invited to open accession talks with NATO. Together, these countries formed the single largest group ever to pass through NATO’s open door. Today they are staunch NATO Allies, each and all.

Working relations between the NATO and the United Nations (UN) were limited during the Cold War. This changed in 1992, against the background of growing conflict in the Western Balkans, where their respective roles in crisis management led to an intensification of practical cooperation between the two organizations in the field. The experience gained in the Balkans paved the way for close cooperation on the ground in Afghanistan a decade later.
