This Is Not a Drill – Fire Breaks Out in Varosha, Cyprus

The ghost town of Varosha is located in the north-eastern part of Cyprus. During the 1960s and 1970s, it was a holiday resort like present-day Monte Carlo, but today it is a restricted military area. The town is under the military control of the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus, and there are two UN patrol bases in the area as well.

By yearslong tradition, the two-day international championship of the Cyprus Services Orienteering League (CSOL) took place in Dhekelia Station this year, with individual participants and teams of several nations competing at the event.

Hungarians in UNFICYP

The 28th rotation of the Hungarian Defence Forces’ mission in Cyprus (UNFICYP HUNCON) deployed to the area of operations (AO) in September, 2010. The HUNCON personnel were last seen together on the airplane transporting the rotation, since they were performing their tasks during the 12 months of their tour of duty abroad in four different places, mostly serving with multinational units.
