Hungarian Champions of Orienteering in Cyprus
Szöveg: Lt.-Col. Imre Kovács | 2015. május 3. 10:12By yearslong tradition, the two-day international championship of the Cyprus Services Orienteering League (CSOL) took place in Dhekelia Station this year, with individual participants and teams of several nations competing at the event.
Of the Hungarian troops serving with UNFICYP, Maj. Péter Nagy and his wife, Capt. Andrea Óváry-Nagy – the members of the Veszprém Honvéd Military Sports Association in Hungary – entered the race and completed a course which is more than six kilometers as the crow flies, rich in rocky and steep upward slopes and gullies, and hard to run.
Thanks to a successful preparatory training in the winter, the Hungarian competitors – who were running along a varied course that requires great concentration in orienteering – were able to finish first and win their individual champion titles in their own categories.
UNFICYP Force Commander Maj.-Gen. Kristin Lund awarded medals to the winning champions in recognition of their excellent performance and results, and thanked them for deservedly representing the UNFICYP.
The Force Commander told us that he thinks it very important for the UN troops to participate in as many local events as possible, because these occasions go a long way towards maintaining good relationships. He added that he was especially pleased to see the Hungarians becoming champions in an event that requires the use of land navigation – one of the most important military skills – in practice.
