In mid-October Strategic Airlift Capability supported Exercise Swift Response 17-2, while simultaneously completing the Off Station Training for 2017. A team of aircrew, command and control personnel and flying crew chiefs were deployed to Aviano Air Base in Italy, 10 to 13 October.
Breaking New Ground – First SAC Mission to Timbuktu

In late November 2016, SAC completed its first mission directly to Timbuktu in Mali. Previous missions have gone to Bamako, the capital of Mali. There the cargo has been transferred to other smaller Aircraft i.e C-130’s, for further transport to Timbuktu. The mission was carried out on request from Sweden, and the cargo consisted of personal equipment to the Swedish soldiers in the fifth rotation of the Swedish deployment in Mali.
Strategic Airlift Capability C-17A Fleet Reaches 20,000 Flight Hours

The three Boeing C-17A Globemaster III long-range cargo jets of the 12-nation Strategic Airlift Capability have achieved a significant milestone. The total flying time of the aircraft, operated by the multinational Heavy Airlift Wing (HAW), exceeded 20,000 flight hours on 10 August 2016 during an airlift mission requested by SAC member nation Romania.

As a contractor in support of the 12-nation Strategic Airlift Capability (SAC), Boeing provides the three SAC C-17A aircraft with on-site maintenance, engineering, and spares support. Thanks to an internship program initiated by Boeing Hungary, talented Hungarian engineering students have a unique opportunity to work with the C-17As at Pápa Air Base, the home of the SAC.

In 2015, the operational unit of the Strategic Airlift Capability (SAC), the Heavy Airlift Wing (HAW), produced more than 2,800 flight hours. The missions requested by the 12 SAC member nations were executed both safely and cost-effectively.
Strategic Airlift Capability Supports Exercise Dagger Resolve with Airdrop of Heavy Vehicles

In December, a Strategic Airlift Capability C-17 cargo jet carried out an airdrop of heavy engineer equipment in support of exercise Dagger Resolve. At the request of SAC member nation the United States, a heavy-duty dump truck and a bulldozer from the 54th Brigade Engineer Battalion, 173rd Airborne Brigade were transported to Hohenfels Training Area Drop Zone in Germany.
New Transient Hazardous Material Storage Facility Completed at Pápa Air Base

Member nations of the Strategic Airlift Capability (SAC) are investing in the infrastructure at Pápa Air Base in order to enhance the ability of the base to serve as an air transportation hub. Completion of the new Transient Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) Storage Facility enables SAC to respond to a broader spectrum of its member nations’ airlift needs and will be operational from January 1, 2016.
