Boeing’s Internship Program Offers Hungarian Engineering Students an Opportunity to Work with the Strategic Airlift Capability C-17As
Szöveg: sacprogram.org | 2016. augusztus 10. 9:28As a contractor in support of the 12-nation Strategic Airlift Capability (SAC), Boeing provides the three SAC C-17A aircraft with on-site maintenance, engineering, and spares support. Thanks to an internship program initiated by Boeing Hungary, talented Hungarian engineering students have a unique opportunity to work with the C-17As at Pápa Air Base, the home of the SAC.
During the summer of 2015, the internship program was launched with two students. Satisfied with the experiences, Boeing’s Field Operations Team decided to hire three interns this year. Gergely György and Szabolcs Grünvald study at the BME, while Gergely Gulyás came to Pápa from the University of Glasgow. All three study Aerospace Engineering as their major discipline, they will work at Pápa Air Base until the end of August.
The students have enjoyed the unique opportunity of being able to work with Boeing’s experienced technicians and engineers in their native country. For Gergely György, the internship has been a dream come true. “I remember watching the SAC C-17As approach Pápa Air Base when I was in high school, dreaming about what it would be like to work with them. Well, now I’m here and it’s every bit as amazing as I imagined it to be. Everyone has devoted a lot of their time and effort to help us learn as much as we can. Add the sheer amount of technical data we’re exposed to, and you’re in an aerospace nerd’s heaven", he says enthusiastically.
Szabolcs Grünvald emphasizes that “it has been great to see how the theories we have learned at the university are applied in practice here in Pápa." In particular, he has enjoyed working on and solving the real-life engineering tasks assigned to the interns. To conclude, Gergely Gulyás praises the welcome all the interns have received in Pápa. “It feels great to work with a group of professionals who share the same passion as we do. Not a day goes by without learning something new and it’s fantastic to see how the team works together. Everyone has been so helpful that we can’t thank them enough", he says.
NATO Airlift Management Programme Office contracts Boeing via a Foreign Military Sales agreement to provide technical support for the SAC C-17A aircraft. Boeing’s Field Operations Team at Pápa Air Base is responsible for the launch, recovery, servicing, repair, and inspection of the SAC C-17As on a daily basis, including periodic Home Station Checks. Boeing provides the SAC with on-site back-shop support for wheel and tire teardown and buildup, aircraft battery maintenance, structural repair, alternate mission equipment, and limited avionics repair. Furthermore, Boeing’s maintenance recovery teams are ready to provide immediate maintenance support whenever and wherever necessary.
