A Strong Standoff

While participating in Exercise Saber Junction 2015, the rifle company of the HDF 25th “Klapka György” Infantry Brigade of Tata has already proven this dogma wrong, and its latest combat maneuver has at least been a strong standoff against an OPFOR that has vehicles more mobile than the BTRs and far better knowledge of the terrain. “We successfully reconnoitered the enemy and tried to defeat it. As they were able to maneuver faster than us, they managed to retreat, but they suffered losses. Tonight we are going to execute this task once again" – CSM József Balogh 1st rifle company (Tata) informed us about the events in brief.
It also turned out that in what follows, several infantry sub-units of the regiment under US command will conduct a synchronized maneuver to reconnoiter the forward line of enemy troops and the obstacles which are to be breached by an engineer sub-unit. During the complex maneuver, the Tata company will be maneuvering and providing fire support for the freedom of movement detachment.
Exercise Saber Junction 2015 is nearing its most complex phase in which there will be a dayslong run of events – of course, with Hungarian participation – without any operational breaks.
“By the warning order, we have to prepare for launching an attack on the right flank of the regiment. We are tasked to reconnoiter the enemy in our combat zone. If it is staying in an inhabited area, we have to protect the civilians. Preferably, we have to find out if the enemy has any chemical weapons, and in general, we are tasked to help with the exploitation", the CSM said this about the near future, adding that judging by the time they have spent here so far, he thinks that this exercise is good for the company indeed.
“To meet our superiors’ expectations, we need to learn to cooperate in international environments, and we don’t find it problematic at all. The American partners are taking a very positive attitude to the tasks and are helping us a lot. For instance, what I have in mind is that they are using much less abbreviations than usual, and are trying to explain things to every nation to make sure that everybody has a common understanding", CSM József Balogh said.
In our experience, every American we asked praised the Hungarian troops’ high professional standards. So it cannot be an accident that the OPFOR does not always win…
