After more than three years of preparations, on Tuesday, June 3 Col. Dr. László Töll, the Head of the MoD Public Relations and War Memorial Service Department unveiled a Hungarian war memorial built in the village of Zakrivci, Ukraine.

Fifty-seven Hungarian soldiers of the 10th Szolnok and 19th Békéscsaba infantry regiments fell in the region during the battles fought in Galicia in 1944. They were buried in the churchyard of Zakrivci, whereas six soldiers were laid to rest in the cemetery.

In 2011, the staff of the MoD Public Relations and War Memorial Service Department identified the location and started negotiations about the building of memorials.

Several relatives traveled to the scene to attend the unveiling ceremony on Tuesday. For them, the opportunity has now come, after 70 years, to pay tribute by their family members’ graves. In addition to the bishop of Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, the memorial was consecrated by Maj. Csaba Szentesi, Greek Catholic army chaplain. Besides the Ukrainian county and district leaders, the Hungarian Consul Generals in Uzhhorod and Berehove also attended the event.
