“We’ll show no mercy, no restraint!” – this was what the Portuguese soldiers of the KFOR Tactical Reserve Maneuver Battalion (KTM) promised their Hungarian peacekeeping colleagues before the start of a recently held Full Operational Capability (FOC) exercise. The members of the Portuguese subunit playing the role of the “bad boys” kept to their promise indeed as they were attacking the Hungarians serving in Kosovo under the most realistic circumstances during a simulated crowd riot control (CRC) exercise.

“We’ll show no mercy, no restraint!"

The Full Operational Capability (FOC) exercise for the 10th rotation of the HDF KFOR Contingent was organized next to the village of Vrelo, at an abandoned military aerodrome. Along the one-kilometer long course, the Portuguese “Opposing Force" (OPFOR) used various tactics to test the capability level of the Hungarian maneuver company. The Hungarian soldiers, however, overcame all obstacles excellently, properly reacting to even those situations which they had not encountered during the drills, because the OPFOR had “kept them" for the culmination exercise.

Apart from the unusual situations, the conventional “hit out at them" ones were also simulated. Starting with initial shouting and passive resistance, the exercise soon reached the point of throwing debris, mud and burning Molotov-cocktails, accompanied with shield-banging.

“Our pre-deployment training in Hungary was complex and thorough. Under the guidance of our Portuguese colleagues, we have managed to elaborate our procedure a bit", SFC Zoltán Répás, the commander of the front-line peacekeepers told us, adding that “Our men are well-trained, they have done a great job, but frankly, it didn’t surprise me as I know them and serve together with them at home too."

At the end of the exercise, the soldiers of the two nations naturally greeted one another as friends

The exercise was closed with an after action review, which identified the weaknesses and proposed ways to improve on them. The battalion headquarters was satisfied with the result of the exercise. With this, the Hungarian “Charlie" company has reached Full Operational Capability (FOC), and is now ready to deploy in the entire area of Kosovo.
