Military Attachés Visit the Southern Border

On Wednesday, 10 May the defence, military and air attachés accredited to Hungary visited the Kelebia Border Security Base of the HDF Task Force Alföld (HDF TFA).

The delegation was received by Col. Dr. Péter Lippai, Deputy Commander, HDF 5th Bocskai István Infantry Brigade. In his presentation, the commander talked about the structure of the HDF TFA and the Border Security Base, and also about the system of performance of duties along the border, while also pointing out the effectiveness of cooperation with the police.

After the presentation, Maj. Róbert Csontos introduced the attachés to the facilities on the base, the air-conditioned containerized housing units accommodating the soldiers, the gyms and free-time spaces, as well as the laundries equipped with washing machines and dryers, where the military attachés met the soldiers serving along the border section.

Following the introduction to the base, at the Kelebia border section, Maj.-Gen. József Lajtár, Deputy Director General, Finance and IT, Hungarian Prison Service Headquarters talked about the electronical and security system of the fence and its parameters. In what followed, the military attachés representing 20 nations visited the recently expanded transit zone at Tompa, which is operated by the Immigration and Asylum Office. Here, they were greeted by Police Lt.-Col. István Hegyesi, Acting Head of Department of Migration Guard and Escort, Bács-Kiskun County Police HQ, and then Előd Szabó, the head of the Kiskunhalas bureau of the Immigration and Asylum Office talked about the operational system of the transit zone and the asylum procedure. Finally, Tamás Ottó Varga informed the attachés about the accommodation circumstances in the reception facility and the support of asylum seekers.

At the end of the program, speaking on behalf of the delegation, Lt.-Col. Uwe Wilhelm Clemens, the doyen of the Budapest Military Attaché Corps said thanks for the daylong program.
