The Budaörs military cemetery – a final resting place of German and Hungarian heroes fallen in World War II – is being restored by German and Hungarian soldiers cooperating with each other.

The peace park, which is orderly in itself, has been in the care of German and Hungarian soldiers since May 19. During these two weeks, the personnel of the HDF vitéz Szurmay Sándor Budapest Garrison Brigade are cooperating with Bundeswehr service members in renewing the inscriptions on the headstones and improving the condition of the walkways.

More than 13,000 German and some 570 Hungarian war heroes are buried in the Budaörs cemetery. The maintenance of the gravestones extends to the graves of both nations’ soldiers.

Construction of Hungary’s second largest military cemetery started in 1996. It opened in 2002 as a peace park, in the service of reconciliation.
