During the Hot Blade 2018 exercise the flight crew of the HDF 86th Szolnok Helicopter Base conducted the Portuguese soldiers’ jumping into the water, and their hoisting out of the water.

The novelty of the task lay in the fact that they could practice the methods under difficult topographical conditions, and over an extensive water surface. Manoeuvres over the water – such as hanging – require close attention from the three-person crew, as the ripples, waves upon the water may influence spatial navigation.

The special operations troops of the Portuguese Air Force and the units of the Land Forces jumped into the water from 3 to 5 meter heights. In what follows the soldiers were hoisted on board one after the other. This method is suitable for lifting, rescuing persons and cargos from an area, where helicopters cannot land.

Noteworthy too, that before take-off, the Hungarian and the Portuguese aircrews prepare together for the task, clarifying the signs and signals, which they will use during the manoeuvres over the water. It is of particular significance during such operations, that the parties can clearly understand each other’s rules and intentions – this is also a key to success.
