Preparing for an International Evaluation

The soldiers of Debrecen are training for the NATO CREVAL, an international evaluation process. It depends on the execution of the tasks during the evaluation process whether the infantry battle group (IBG) drawn from the 39th Infantry Battalion of the HDF 5th “Bocskai István” Infantry Brigade will be assessed as “combat ready”.

In 2010 the IBG was already assessed as “combat ready", but the CREVAL needs to be
conducted anew every three year in the interest of maintaining the level of capabilities.
According to plans, the international evaluation will take place in Várpalota in mid-May.

“This evaluation assesses the readiness of the IBG on the basis of several hundred
Performance Measures (PM), ranging from personnel and manning levels to material supplies
to task execution in the field", Col. Dr. Péter Lippai told us at the tactical training session of
the IBG in Hajdúhadház on February 6.

The deputy commander of the HDF 5th “Bocskai István" Infantry Brigade added that “a 20-
strong evaluator team – including evaluators officially delegated by NATO – will check the
PMs for the special areas."

The infantrymen of Debrecen have been training for the CREVAL since February 1. Lt.-
Col. Zsolt Vantal, the commander of the 39th Infantry Battalion told us that “Drawn from our
subunit, the IBG has started the preparation with combined arms training which is aimed at
building unit cohesion on squad and platoon levels."
