Preparing for Disaster Management

The designated units of the Hungarian Defence Forces (HDF) and the Partner Nations will take part in a computer supported multinational (Hungarian-Ukrainian-Slovakian-Romanian) Command Post Exercise CPX) between September 18 and 22. Brig. Gen. Dr. Gábor Böröndi, the Commander of the HDF 5th “Bocskai István” Infantry Brigade will conduct the “TISZA” Multinational Engineer Battalion’s exercise named Blond Avalanche 2011.

The assigned sub-units of the HDF 5th “Bocskai István" Infantry Brigade reached the final stage of their preparation for the CPX named “Blond Avalanche" connected with a demonstration. The exercise will be carried out in the garrisons of Szentes. In the hypothetic situation the civilian population, the technical equipment and the personal properties must be rescued from a flooded area.

The participating personnel of the Brigade’ Operations Support Engineer Battalion and Combat Support Engineer Battalion will jointly perform the mission with the assigned troops of the Slovakian, Romanian and Ukrainian Forces, in cooperation with the specialists of the HDF Joint Forces Command (JFC), the HDF 37th “Rákóczi Ferenc Engineer Regiment, the HDF 86th Szolnok Helicopter Base, the National Directorate General for Disaster Management and the directorate of water management with territorial competency. The opening of the exercise takes place on Monday, 19th of September in Hódmezővásárhely.

Lt. Col. Ferenc Bátor, the Commander of the Operations Support Engineer Battalion of the HDF 5th “Bocskai István" Infantry Brigade told us that the objective of the disaster management drill is to demonstrate the operational efficiency of the cooperating forces, and to develop the skills of the participating command staff in planning, organising, command and control tasks, and the cooperational capabilities of the national modules.

The assigned sub-units of the Hungarian Defence Forces set out for the venue of the exercise on Monday, 12th of September. At present they develop the team spirit in the Hungarian module. Shortly, the troops of the cooperating countries will arrive, and besides preparing for the dynamic demonstration, the Staff members of the “TISZA" Engineer Battalion will begin the execution of their special assignments.
