The annual shooting championship of the military attachés accredited to Hungary was organised for the 25th time with the support of the MoD International Co-operation Department and the HDF vitéz Szurmay Sándor Budapest Garrison Brigade (MH BHD) on 13th May at the shooting range of Püspökszilágy. The military diplomats tested their skills for the Challenge Cup in three events with assault rifles and handguns in service with the Hungarian Defence Forces (HDF).

The defence, military and air attachés were received by Lt.-Col. Tamás Zsolnai, the acting Chief of Staff (CoS) of the HDF vitéz Szurmay Sándor Budapest Garrison Brigade in Püspökszilágy. After reviewing the strict safety rules of the target practice, the military diplomats took over the ammunition, and following the caching, the championship began.

This year eight attachés tested their skills in three events for the Challenge Cup. The participants first used the AK-63 assault rifle, in service with the HDF to fire on targets placed at a distance of 100 meters, and then they shot with P9RC Parabellum pistols on a 25-meter fire lane. The last event was a man vs. man shooting with assault rifles, which meant the greatest challenge for the attachés. The one who first hit the target with the Kalashnikov, qualified for the next round. At the MH BHD Training Base and Shooting Range the military diplomats had the opportunity to get acquainted, besides the arms in service, with the Hungarian developed Gepard GM6 Lynx anti-material sniper rifle.

“It is a great pleasure for me that we could compete with each other in such a beautiful environment – the competition offers an excellent opportunity to get to know each other better. We owe our thanks to the Ministry of Defence and also to the Brigade’s soldiers for the well-organised day" – noted Colonel Toma-Stafan Savu, the Doyen of the Budapest Military Attaché Corps.

The certificates and prizes according to the placings were presented by Lt.-Col. Tamás Zsolnai to the competitors. Based on the combined results, the champion of the competition was the Defence Attaché of Romania, Colonel Toma-Stefan Savu, so this year he could take home the Challenge Cup for the best marksman.
