In the morning of April 10, the 11th district Fidesz-KDNP parliamentary group held a commemorative ceremony on the second anniversary of the airplane disaster at Smolensk, which had claimed the lives of Polish President Lech Aleksander Kaczynsky and other 95 victims. István Simicskó, the Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, the MP of the district delivered a commemorative speech during the event held by the memorial tree of the victims in Újbuda.

István Simicskó recalled the parallels between Polish and Hungarian history. He reminded the participants that the two nations have always stood by each other, so we could rely on each other in tragedies and successes. We have always been able to gain strength for the great challenges from this close friendship, knowing that our Polish brothers are on our side, the Parliamentary State Secretary pointed out.

The Polish and the Hungarian people have belonged together during the past 1,000 years, in the storms of the 20th century and they belong together today as well. These two peoples have the closest historical ties in Europe, and a unique emotional bond has developed between the Hungarian and the Polish nations.

“We have to draw the attention of today’s generations to these values. I hope we can share in the successes in the future, just like we share in the sorrow of today’s commemoration", said István Simicskó in closing his speech.

After the Parliamentary State Secretary’s speech, Tamás Hoffmann, the mayor of the district and the representatives of the Polish Embassy in Budapest and the Polish minority local governments of Hungary bowed heads to the victims’ memory, then laid flowers by the memorial tree after a joint prayer.
