Accident Simulation at HDF Pápa Air Base

On Tuesday, November 15 there was a simulation exercise going on at the HDF Pápa Air Base. The training objective was to prepare the emergency response duty alert services for dealing with accidents and disasters in the dangerous facilities around the air base.

The northern fuel storage depot of Pápa Air Base exploded, and a large quantity of aviation fuel poured out and caught fire. Three soldiers on duty were injured in the accident.

The fire service of the air base reached the accident scene in two minutes. The commander, Sgt. 1st Class István Nagy assessed the extent of the damage, immediately notified the medical center of the casualties and reported the event to the Base Operations Center, which requested further external forces to contain the very dangerous fire.

In the meantime, the fire service of the air base started extinguishing the fire, taking care that the flames cannot spread to the nearby fuel depot. The military police service of the barracks closed down the roads leading to the Base.

Ambulances rushed to the scene in no time, and the first responders of the medical service, led by Lt. Beáta Bártfai gave first aid to the injured and evacuated them from the scene.

Capt. Attila Csortos, the duty supervisor of the Base Operations Center was satisfied with the content and timely transmission of the information and reports. Acting under a prompt and determined control, the assigned personnel successfully executed the task by synchronizing their efforts.

Speaking at the after action review (AAR), Lt.-Col. Zoltán Vicai, the chief of staff of the base assessed the task execution as satisfactory.
