While some soldiers of the HDF 5th “Bocskai István” Infantry Brigade participating in Exercise Clever Ferret 2014 in Slovenia recently demonstrated their capabilities to chiefs of defence and superiors in the military training area of Apace, a nine-man team took part in the Challenge Cup held in Novo Mesto. Seven teams – including one comprising Hungarian infantrymen of the 39th infantry battalion – entered the military competition, which was part of the multinational exercise.

The soldiers had to cover a distance of 25 kilometers with eight control points on the way, where they had to meet various challenges. Among others, they executed a MEDEVAC task during which they had to carry a stretcher on 800 meters, with a 75-kg bag on it as a substitute for an injured person. There was a weapon and vehicle recognition task, and a Combat Fitness Training too. Land navigation was one of the greatest challenges.

The participants had a hard time indeed, as they were competing under mountain terrain conditions in the heat, wearing body armor and equipped with weapons, load-bearing vests and 15-kg backpacks. Nevertheless, the Hungarian team won the international competition, outperforming the other six Italian and Slovenian teams and finishing with a result of 9 hours 27 minutes.

The team captain was Lt. Péter Galambos, and the team members were SSgt. István Sári, SSgt. Bertalan Dévai, Sgt. Balázs Csákvári, Sgt. János Szalkai, Cpl. Krisztián Mátrai, Pfc. Ádám Hanyánszki, Pfc. Tamás Tilki and Pte. Zsolt Oláh.
