Concentration and Endurance

The special ceremonial group of the HDF “vitéz Szurmay Sándor” Budapest Garrison Brigade 32nd National  Parade Unit recently participated in an international DrillFest which was held to mark the day of the armed forces of the Czech Republic.

The international performance was preceded by several appearances in Hungary this year, since the group has already been invited to Kecskemét, Miskolc and Pestszentimre among others, where their show was a great success. Besides the Hungarian soldiers, Czech, Polish and Austrian groups also participated in the Prague DrillFest, giving the best of their exhibition drill (XD) skills.

Lt. Ádám Gyarmati, the leader of the Hungarian group told us that the international appearance had really got the adrenalin flowing, more than the usual ones, since apart from representing Hungary at the event, they also had to adapt to the characteristics of the location.

In spite of the overcast day and the humid cobblestones, the members of the group were able to perform the rifle exhibition drill display very precisely and proficiently, giving proof of their high professional standards. After the rehearsals, the program started at 2:00 p.m. The Hungarian formation marched in to Wenceslas Square to the melodies of the Kossuth-march, where it was received with a huge round of applause. The ceremonial groups performed their XD displays one after the other, and then the Drill Meet was closed with a joint parade march.

As compared to the displays performed by foreign groups, the 8 min 30 sec program of the Hungarians was special because they are the only ones who perform especially dangerous aerial tosses while facing each other at a significant distance, or even over-the-shoulder drills standing with their backs to each other. The SKS assault rifle – the weapon used by the members of the group – weighs close to five kilograms, so the aerial tosses performed with the bayonets fixed place especially heavy physical and mental burden on them.

Ádám Gyarmati told us that each performance requires a lot of concentration and readiness. The members of the special ceremonial group train for their appearances on top of the performance of their daily duties. Time after time, the proper execution of the armed drills and the parading movements, their continuous synchronization as well as the various weather conditions and terrain features challenge the soldiers’ concentration and endurance. But the energy put into the training pays off regularly, as the special ceremonial group is constantly growing in popularity. The audience can enjoy the next appearance of the group during the Lake Balaton cross swimming competition.

The members of the group appearing in Prague were Lt. Ádám Gyarmati, SSgt. László Hajós, Cpl. Péter Balog, Cpl. Zoltán Móré, Cpl. Tibor Kelemen, PV2 Attila Szőke, PV2 Tamás Tóth, PV2 Edmond Csók, PV2 Róbert Kosztel and PFC Tamás Takács.
