Culinary Teams Compete at UNFICYP Headquarters

This year, besides the daily routine, the period between late May and early June is about various competitions of teams and sectors in the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) mission. After the recently held “Military Skills Competition”, next came a competition of culinary teams on May 27.

Each sector entered a two-person team, which had to prepare a three-course menu consisting of hors d’ oeuvre, main dish and dessert. All teams had to do this in one hour, with the additional constraint that they were allowed to use only UN-supplied ingredients, and no pre-arrangements were allowed.

In the spirit of fair play, the teams were marked with color codes. The pairing of respective colors with teams was disclosed only after the voting. In the competition, Sector 4 was represented by Cpl. Attila Benkovics and Cpl. Sándor Szlapák. The competitors had to prepare the meals for the ten-member jury presided by the UNFICYP Force Commander, Chinese Maj.-Gen. Chao Liu.

In the jury, the commander of Sector 4 was represented by Maj. Róbert Fekete, the deputy commander of the Hungarian contingent, who thanked the chefs for their performance and stressed that he – needless to say, without bias – and the Force Commander, too, found the Hungarian menu to be the tastiest of all.

The Hungarian culinary team finished third, only one vote behind the runner-up team of the British Sector 2. The winner of the competition was the Argentine team of Sector 1.

The Hungarian team’s menu comprised the following: cheese-dumplings with curd, spicy chicken breast a la Somogy and Gundel-pancake.

The inter-sector competition will be taken one stage further on June 11, when Sector 4 is to organize an UNFICYP sporting day, where the sectors can compete with each other at cross-fit, beach volleyball and beach soccer events.
