Declining security in Afghanistan

Hungarian troops are working in a declining security situation in Afghanistan, but they are basically satisfied with their equipment − Minister of Defence Dr. Csaba Hende summarised what he has experienced in Afghanistan. At the same time he also said that based on information he received he has launched two inquiries.

The inquiries have to focus on the accomodation of Hungarian troops recently
arriving to Mazar-e Sharif, who live in tents instead of armoured containers, and the
reason for the late arrival of armoured jeeps to the logistic training team working in
Kabul, who had to drive combat vehicles in the city. Organisational problems or the
question of individual responsibility arise in both issues − said Dr. Csaba Hende.
It also concerns the security of the troops that the Hungarian base in Pol-e Khumri
is located in a valley surrounded by high mountains.

The other side of the peaks is
already a region controlled by insurgents. This is worrying, therefore the minister had
talks with NATO’s local political and military decision makers in order to resolve
the situation. It was also on the agenda in his meeting with Gen. Stanley McChrystal,
Commander ISAF. The defence minister requested support in military reconnaissance
and in the event of an attack against the base.
