Although Easter does not have a long-established tradition in the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) mission stationed in Sinai Peninsula, the Hungarian peacekeeping contingent did not forget the holiday. The MFO did not organize any central ceremonies, but it declared Easter Sunday an official holiday.

The Colombian Battalion (COLBATT), which has strong religious roots, was celebrating in a spectacular and traditional way. Any member of the MFO “family" was free to join their programs which included observing Lent, presenting tableaux at the Stations of the Cross, procession and services.

Most members of the Hungarian contingent were working during the Easter because they were on duty according to the work schedule. Of course, they had time to celebrate as well. On Easter Sunday in the afternoon hours, the Hungarian soldiers and policemen were making arrangements for the traditional short commemoration under the public affairs officer’s guidance, and the Hungarian flavors were present in the dishes. In this afternoon, they decorated the Hungarian bar with an “egg tree", painted eggs and an Easter basket. There were ham, eggs and chocolate bunnies on the table.

To many, it was a mystery how the logistic NCO was able to obtain the ingredients. However, the afternoon meal was certainly a great success, and helped to forget the absence of families, friends and relatives for a little while.

Easter Monday, the day of sprinkling" was a workday in the MFO mission.
