A ceremony to mark Europe Day took place recently in the square outside Army Hall in downtown Sarajevo. Besides several high-ranking civilians and soldiers, the event was also attended by the headquarters of the Multinational Battalion of the EUFOR ALTHEA mission, and the maneuver companies were also present as ceremonial subunits.

The organizers of the ceremony consider the Schumann Declaration as a document that sets out the basic principles on which the European Union is built. They not only celebrated the establishment of the European Union, but also remembered and praised the troops serving with EUFOR who have participated from the beginnings in creating and keeping peace and in managing natural disasters.

The commemoration started with a flypast of nine helicopters over the square. In what followed, Lars-Gunnar Wigemark, Head of the EU Delegation to BiH and EU Special Representative opened the event with a speech. He emphasized that the most important message of the Europe Day celebration is the close cooperation between the European Union and Bosnia-Herzegovina –including cooperation between EUFOR and the Armed Forces of Bosnia-Herzegovina (AFBiH) – in the field of creating and maintaining security and stability.

The special representative thanked the troops currently serving with the mission and their predecessors for their conscientious and dedicated work, through which they have promoted and are still promoting the reign of peace in the country.

Commander EUFOR Maj.-Gen. Friedrich Schrötter expressed thanks for the close cooperation and assured those present that the main goal of the European Union and EUFOR within it is to help Bosnia-Herzegovina with maintaining continuous peace and stability.

Lars-Gunnar Wigemar and Maj.-Gen. Schrötter jointly tied a ribbon on the wreath symbolizing the coat of arms of the European Union, which, as shown by the inscription on it, commemorates those who sacrificed their lives for creating peace.
