Heavy Airlift Wing Celebrates 4th Anniversary

On Friday, June 26 representatives of the Heavy Airlift Wing (HAW), HDF Pápa Air Base, the NATO Airlift Management Program Office (NAMPO) and Boeing Co. jointly celebrated the 4th anniversary of the military organization made up of 12 member nations.

Four years have passed since the HAW activation document was read out at the handover ceremony of the first C–17 Globemaster III heavy cargo aircraft, in the morning of July 27, 2009 – with this, the Heavy Airlift Wing officially commenced service at HDF Pápa Air Base. Speaking at the ceremony held in a family atmosphere, HAW Vice-Commander Col. Trevor Nitz talked about the successes and results of the past four years. He was pleased to announce that the Wing has reached 11,000 flight hours. He thanked those present for their efforts made in the recent period, and wished them every success in their work.

Of course, the birthday cake at the event was nothing else but a grey C–17 aircraft with marzipan icing…
