Helping to Speak the Same Language

This week the 6th NATO Military Engineering Working Group is being held at Stefánia Palace, Budapest – an event which is a priority for Hungary too. The working group meets twice a year, first at the NATO HQ in Brussels and then in a given member state, this year in Hungary.

The NATO Military Engineering Working Group (MILENG WG) was set up three years ago. Operating in the subordination of the NATO Standardisation Agency, it has the main roles of harmonizing engineering doctrines, STANAGs and operating standards, and of developing them through integration of the lessons learned during the tasks executed by member states.

The Hungarian Defence Forces are a member of NATO and participate in NATO-led operations from the Balkans to Afghanistan. For this reason, it is necessary to use the standardized procedures for the areas of operations, which include the systems of reporting as well as the operational plans and procedures, aimed at helping to speak the same language.

The 6th working group is attended by leaders of NATO member states, the countries in observer status, and the various NATO commands and organizations. Currently 82 representatives are present in Hungary from 20 nations and seven NATO organizations and commands – Lt.-Col. (Eng.) Zoltán Katona, the engineering desk officer of the Defence Staff Operations Directorate, Branch Department told us.
