The hoisting of the county flag with military honours in the square in front of the municipality of Kaposvár is already a tradition in 2011, the event took place in the morning of January 3. The ceremony held in the seat of Somogy county formally started a seven-day series of events called County Days, which are held in the first week of January every year.

Thirty minutes before the opening event, the servicemembers of the HDF 64th Boconádi Szabó József Regiment were practicing for the ceremonial hoisting of the flag and they even had time for a short meeting with the Somogy Hussars, who were accompanying the flag, to find out who arrived and from where, when did they salute, and to which direction the square should be emptied following the ceremony.

After the signal the troops marched into the square with the county flag, accompanied by Hussars. Lieutenant Gábor Karnis, their commanding officer asked Attila Gelencsér, the chairman of the Somogy County General Assembly, for permission to hoist the colours. The county flag was hoisted next to the flags of the Republic of Hungary and the European Union, to the tunes of the national anthem.

The organizers told honvedelem.hu that the series of events are held evey year to celebrate the anniversary of the Coat of Arms of the County; this year they are celebrating for the 513th time. The corps stationed in the seat of Somogy county have played an important role in the opening ceremony for decades. During the County Days, a number of exhibitions are held and the city will also host conferences on history and scientific presentations in the coming days. There is even a nursery tale exhibition for the children, and the series of events will close with a formal session of the county’s general assembly, and the traditional county ball.

The organizers have tried to offer every resident of Somogy county a wide range of programs to choose from.
