In the third week of April a multi-stage IT development project has been completed in the area of responsibility of the HDF KFOR Contingent. Thanks to the CIMIC team of the contingent, students in four secondary schools have received new IT equipments that will contribute to the preparation for the challenges of the information society.

The aim of the multi-stage development project was to open up a world of opportunities for secondary school students by contributing to the development of their computer skills. In today’s information society computer literacy is a must for everyone of us. It is also in our interest because with the help of the Internet we get new opportunities, offers much faster, be it seeking employment or shopping. 70 per cent of the population of Kosovo are under 35, while 40 per cent of them are under 20. This young society needs to gain practical, marketable knowledge, for employment opportunities are still limited despite the fact that in recent years several international companies have got a foothold in the country. The knowledge of modern IT systems and the skill-level use of the Internet are essential to that.

By having donated IT equipments to four secondary schools, the HDF KFOR Contingent facilitates the acquisition of the necessary knowledge. In the framework of the program launched in March, Hungarian troops have donated IT equipments in the centre of Gjakove/Djakovica district to Kadri Kusari School of Economy, Hajdar Dushi Grammar School, Nexhmedin Nixha Technical School, and Hysmi Zajmi Medical School. The first three secondary schools have been presented with 8 PC configurations, 8 uninterruptable power supplies, 6 laser printers, 1 projector and 1 screen, respectively. The last one, that is the medical school was in a more fortunate situation than the other educational institutions beause their IT room already had up-to-date configurations, therefore they have received printers, UPS’s, a projector and a screen.

The commander of the contingent, Major István Cseklán was present on every occasion and emphasised in all four schools that teaching information technology is always a current and important issue in every country. With the help of the computer and the Internet the world opens up and possibilities multiply. Students receive an education that enables them to start their adult life with a marketable knowledge. Ms Silvana Haxhikadrija, the Regional Educational Director was also present at every event and underlined in her thank you speeches that the equipments the schools have received will create more opportunities and will be a great help in teaching and studying alike. With these projects the students of these schools have been given chances they can take and as a result of that, make it easier for themselves to start their lives.
